A flower box is a ready-made gift that needs neither a vase nor trimming of stems. The flowers are arranged right in an elegant hatbox, so all you have to do is hand it over and put it on the table. We explain how a box works, when it is a better choice than a classic bouquet and how to care for it so it lasts as long as possible.
How a flower box works
The flowers in a box do not stand in a vase – they are inserted into floral foam placed at the bottom of the box. The foam works like a sponge: it soaks up water and gradually releases it to the stems. The inside of the box is moisture-proof, so no water leaks out.
This keeps every flower exactly in place. The box is compact, easy to carry and looks just as beautiful on the day of delivery as it does several days later.
Benefits of a flower box
- No vase needed. Ideal for recipients who don’t have a vase at hand, or for offices and reception desks.
- A ready-made gift. The box is handed over as it is – no wrapping paper and no arranging needed.
- Easy to transport. The sturdy box protects the flowers during delivery and when being carried.
- An elegant look. The hatbox looks elegant and is perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, as a thank-you or as a corporate gift.
- Variety. We prepare boxes in various sizes and colour combinations, from soft pastel tones to bold seasonal colours.
When to choose a box and when a classic bouquet
A box is a great choice when you want to give a “no-effort” gift – for example to a hospital, an office, elderly parents or someone who is just travelling home and has nowhere to put a bouquet in water straight away.
A classic bouquet, on the other hand, stands out when you want striking height and long stems, or when the recipient enjoys arranging flowers in a favourite vase.
How to care for a flower box
Care is simple, but a few rules will significantly extend its life:
- Water the foam, not the flowers. Every 1–2 days, carefully pour a little water (about half a cup, depending on the size of the box) right at the base of the flowers. The foam should stay moist, but there should never be standing water in the box.
- Mind the location. Keep the box away from direct sunlight, radiators and draughts. A cooler room is ideal.
- Watch out for fruit. Ripening fruit (especially apples and bananas) releases ethylene, which speeds up wilting.
- Don’t pull the flowers out. Every time a flower is pulled out and pushed back in, it damages the stem and the foam, which then delivers water less well.
- Remove wilted flowers. If a flower wilts earlier, carefully remove it – the box will look fresh for longer.
With proper care, fresh flowers in a box usually last about a week, depending on the type of flowers and the room temperature.
